Bonjour Nora. Bonjour papa.
SPEAKER_01How's my French? Is it okay?
SPEAKER_00It's great.
SPEAKER_01No, don't don't be condescending. Like, how's my French?
SPEAKER_00No, it's good. It's good.
SPEAKER_01Are you practicing? Yeah, because we're coming to we're coming to France to see you. So I've been I've been practicing mois français.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01How was that?
SPEAKER_00Pretty good. Yeah, you got plenty of time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm um I'm good. Okay, so what is a what does a French person call a really bad Wednesday?
SPEAKER_00Wait. Wait, we but this we talked about this last week, and I forgot what the punchline was.
SPEAKER_01Last week it was a really bad Thursday.
SPEAKER_00Well a McMeclidian?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a mercedi. So what are we talking about this week?
SPEAKER_00Uh, I guess we'll give you a recap of what I've been up to for the past two weeks.
SPEAKER_01Sounds good to me. Hit the theme music. Welcome back to the International Nora and Dad Show. I am here with, as always, with Nora, who is at least temporarily speaking to us from Aix-en-Provence, France. How have your last two weeks been? You've been in you've been in classes now for two weeks?
SPEAKER_00I have been in classes for two weeks.
SPEAKER_01How's that going?
SPEAKER_00I like them a lot.
SPEAKER_01Does your does your brain hurt from thinking does your brain hurt from thinking in French all day?
SPEAKER_00Not really. Like the first week it did, but well then I was sick after I was sick this past week. But I think now that I'm like back to being a hundred percent, it shouldn't be that bad.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Sick with did you have a cold? Was it allergies? Did you figure out what was going on?
SPEAKER_00I don't really know. I just took the medicine for cold and allergies are the same, so I just took it and got better. I'm still stuffy though.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you sound a little you sound a little nasally, but that's that's I mean I wouldn't I don't have strong medicine here like they do in the States.
SPEAKER_00I can't take my leaf cold and sinus. I don't have that.
SPEAKER_01We need you you need American medicine.
SPEAKER_00I need Merrican medicine.
SPEAKER_01Strong medicine with a bald eagle on the on the label and bullets and fireworks when you open the package.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they don't have that here. They gave me this little powder that you mix in water instead.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm. And that's and that's why the Germans took over France so easily in World War II.
SPEAKER_00Because they have weak medicine.
SPEAKER_01Because they have weak medicine. They were all congested, and so they just didn't feel like fighting. If they had good strong American medicine, they would have they would have stood their ground and they would have kicked the they would have kicked the Germans out. That's my story. That's that's what I'm going with.
SPEAKER_00Armassage was really nice though. So Oh, and I had I had to go to the ER? Yeah, I wonder how that happened.
SPEAKER_01I want to talk about your your emergency room experience.
SPEAKER_00So my unnecessary emergency room experience.
SPEAKER_01So why don't you explain what happened and then we can talk about why we suggested that you go to the ER.
SPEAKER_00Well, I just I was microwaving my leftover Thai food for dinner. But having Thai food a lot because it's really cheap and there's a place near us. But normally like I'll eat half of it one day and half of it the next day, so I was reheating it. And I guess the microwaves that I've seen at home have never had this, but there's like a metal coil at the top.
SPEAKER_01Is it a it is it a convection microwave where it like actually like heats instead of just microwaving? That's my guess. It's a convection oven, not a microwave.
SPEAKER_00But I've never had I've only I was assumed because it was called a microwave that it would use microwaves, but it doesn't. And our microwave has like this like dome that you like put on top of the food so you don't splatter things.
SPEAKER_01We have one of those.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, and I went to take the dome off, and my hand touched the top of it. The burn just went away. You can't I mean you can still kind of see it a little bit. A really small burn, then it didn't hurt at all. And I called you guys like I think two hours after it happened. I was like, yeah, I got burnt, and it doesn't really hurt that much. What should I do? And then you said to go to the ear.
SPEAKER_01Well, no, you sent us a picture, and then your mom and I both independently like Googled the picture, and the the picture you sent us of your burn on your finger, combined with the fact that you said it didn't hurt, suggested that it might have been a third-degree burn, which is really bad because that's where like skin dies and nerves die.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, especially on your finger where you're moving it a lot.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and your and your your fretting finger, right?
SPEAKER_00No, my strumming finger.
SPEAKER_01Oh, but you're picking the strumming finger? Okay, well, yeah. Oh, you're flipped. Okay. Anyway, but it's that could be really bad. And so your mom and I both independently, because we're so far away from you, independently panicked and said that you should go to the emergency room, which you did, and then you got left out of the emergency room.
SPEAKER_00Dude, there was some scary shit happening at the emergency room.
SPEAKER_01Well so what was going on? Walk us through your ER experience because I don't think I've heard all the scary stuff.
SPEAKER_00We get well, we get to the well, we took an Uber because it's like a 30-minute walk. Well, you you graciously offered to pay for an Uber and get there, and I try to go into the urgent care. The urgent care isn't accepting patients anymore. So I'm like, okay, I have to go to the ER now. The ER is just like a building that anybody can walk into, like doors wide open, no security, no nothing. Um, I go up to the front desk and I start talking to the woman, and I tell her what's wrong, and she takes a picture of the burn and then goes away and doesn't come back for like an hour. While I'm waiting for that to happen, there's a woman that comes in coughing, and they take her in immediately because she's like having issues breathing, and her husband gets up and leaves their like infant baby in the lobby all by itself. So then the like the nurse who's at the reception desk comes out and she's like in front. She's like, Whose baby is this? And I'm like, like, the dad went over there, the mom's in the hospital. So then they found him and he got his baby back.
SPEAKER_01And then I won't my baby back, baby back, baby back.
SPEAKER_00Uh won't be right before I got seen by a nurse. Um, they walked in the an out in handcuffs and he's being held by two people.
SPEAKER_01So yeah. I I had to go get an MRI on Thursday. And they had security had to escort someone out of the MRI. I don't know what happened, but the police came and they had to take someone away from inside one of the MRI rooms. And then the woman ahead of me passed out while she was getting her IV. So my MRI, that's supposed to take 30 minutes, took like two hours, because then she passed out. And then I and then I go back and they have to give me an IV, and then I figured out why the woman passed out because the guy who was giving the I was putting the IVs in was a trainee. Is he not very good? No, he was a trainee. He was learning how to do IVs, and he was like a butcher. So he put the IV in, he missed my vein, and then he was like rooting around trying to find the vein. He's like, does this hurt? And I'm torn between like, I don't, I don't want to make the guy feel bad because he's a student, but then he was also like rooting around inside my arm with a needle and a catheter, and it didn't feel great. So it all it all worked out anyway.
SPEAKER_00So but yeah, but yeah, I saw the the the nurse came out and she looked at it and I told her it happened, and she was and she was like, So what do you want me to do about it? And then kind of laughed and left away.
SPEAKER_01About the about the baby?
SPEAKER_00No, about the burn.
SPEAKER_01About the person, oh about the burn. What do you want me to do about it? I want you to look at and tell me whether I need it to be looked at or not.
SPEAKER_00The answer was no.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so and and it healed on its own. So not a third-degree burn. So so the moral so the moral of the story is that French emergency room staff knows better than Google or Chat GPT whether your burn needs to be looked at by an emergency room.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I probably should have just waited to the next day to go to the pharmacy. And they would have they already bought burn cream for my sunburn, so I already had all the stuff that I needed.
SPEAKER_01Except that the internet told me that if you waited a day, it could get worse because then the skin starts to die, and then it has to be then it has to be debrated, which means they have to cut away all the dead skin.
SPEAKER_00Well, now I have a story to tell.
SPEAKER_01And then and then you might need plastic surgery for your finger. So the sooner you get it looked at, the better. We were trying to save you from needing plastic surgery in France.
SPEAKER_00Thank you.
SPEAKER_01You see, so we we we we had we had your best interest at heart, even though we sent you to the scary emergency room with the abandoned baby and the mean staff.
SPEAKER_00I mean, that was it just was I just well, also my French was very good. Like, I think I think if I had spoken better French, they would have been nicer to me.
SPEAKER_01D do you find that the people there have been because your French is pretty good. Do you find the people there have been kind with your French? Or have they been?
SPEAKER_00I think I mean also like healthcare workers are overworked, and like it's free healthcare here in France, so I'm like they get they get a lot of people coming in, and it was like 10 30, so I'm probably like she was probably just tired at the end of her shift.
SPEAKER_01Got it. Yeah. So but classes, classes are going well?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You're and not as much homework as the US.
SPEAKER_01That's good. R remind me again of of the electives you're taking.
SPEAKER_00Uh French art and advertisement and grammar, etymology, and syntax.
SPEAKER_01Oh. That sounds not the the art one sounds more interesting to me.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I'm enjoying the other one.
SPEAKER_01Are you?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, because she was she's going into like phonetics and stuff, and and that's like the kind of stuff I learned in my class that I took two semesters ago, but it's just in French now instead of in English.
SPEAKER_01So do you get field trips in your art class? Do you go like look at art?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we're going to a museum.
SPEAKER_01That's cool. That's cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh.
SPEAKER_01Alright.
SPEAKER_00And we get to make our own art. Like tomorrow I have to bring scissors to class because we're making collages.
SPEAKER_01Okay. If you cut yourself, go to the ER.
SPEAKER_00Don't go to the ER.
SPEAKER_01No, go to the ER.
SPEAKER_00No, go to the pharmacy. There's a pharmacy right by the university.
SPEAKER_01You you need to think content for the podcast. So if you cut yourself, I want you to go back to the ER.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I got you.
SPEAKER_01I mean, don't do it on purpose, but that would definitely be. Yeah, I I appreciate that. So still still Monday to Thursday with your classes?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, although my French professor on Thursdays changed it to Thursday mornings. So now my Thursday afternoons are completely free, which makes traveling easier.
SPEAKER_01Really? That's cool.
SPEAKER_00Because so I'm thinking of going to Luxembourg to see Courtney Barnett. Because it's on a Saturday instead of a Sunday. But I'd have to leave on a Thursday because it's a 20-hour bus ride.
SPEAKER_01Um Are you really going to take the bus? Is there not a cheap flight you can take?
SPEAKER_00No, the flight is like a hundred and something dollars. The bus is only like sixty. Yeah, but but there's there is And it's an overnight bus, so I sleep on the bus.
SPEAKER_01But there is there is a value in time. Like there is like your time is worth something. And so if it's a sixty dollar difference, but you're not on a bus for 20 hours, then the there is a there is a value in in that sixty dollars is worth think about it. That's three dollars an hour is what you are is is what you are it's it's not worth it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it's the experience. And I get to I get a five over five hour five hour layover in Paris.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, but you're on a bus for 20 hours. That sounds awful. That really sounds driven. And then you gotta ride the bus back for 20 hours in 30 minutes. So you're gonna be so in the span of a weekend, you're gonna you're gonna be on a bus for four that's a day and a half. That is more than a day and a half on a bus in the course of a weekend when for sixty dollars you can be there in like forty-five minutes.
SPEAKER_00You sound like Eli right now.
SPEAKER_01It's the truth. Please please please please don't take a bus for 40 hours. I'm begging you. That is so not worth the time or the or the let me see how much a flight would be.
SPEAKER_00If I have a flight, I get to leave on a Friday instead of a Thursday. I see it's $200.
SPEAKER_01What if you left on Thursday?
SPEAKER_00Well, I have class on Thursday.
SPEAKER_01What if you left Thursday afternoon when you don't have class?
SPEAKER_00They might they they might not have a class or a flight that day. Well uh the cheapest flight is still two hundred dollars.
SPEAKER_01I think the two hundred dollars is worth it as opposed to forty hours on a bus. Plus buses are creepy. There's strange people on buses.
SPEAKER_00I was just on a bus. It was not bad.
SPEAKER_01But you weren't on a bus by yourself. No are you traveling by yourself to Luxembourg?
SPEAKER_00I would be traveling by Luxembourg.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, see, buses are yeah. Like you were on a bus with you were on a bus with what, like nine nine other people, right? Yeah. For your your weekend in Nice.
SPEAKER_00But I sat by myself.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I could do the bus and the train, and that's only 13 hours.
SPEAKER_01That's a little more tolerable. It's still not ideal. Is isn't there just a train?
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, but that's just as expensive as flying.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, it's even more expensive. This is ridiculous.
SPEAKER_01See, you should just fly.
SPEAKER_00The cheapest pass ride is $300. Or the cheapest train ride is $300.
SPEAKER_01Is it really? What if you bought a URL pass? Would that be cheaper?
SPEAKER_00And it's $15 it's 15 hours, so it's like not even worth it.
SPEAKER_01But it but but if you bought a if you bought a URL pass, would that make the plane or the the train cheaper?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I'm on Rome Torio right now.
SPEAKER_01Aha.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and the cheapest flight is still like $200.
SPEAKER_01I think Oh my lord. When is the when when is the concert?
SPEAKER_00October 10th.
SPEAKER_01October 10th. I mean I guess well it'll be nighttime, so you won't see a bunch of France, but get so so I would get on the bus at what time does that leave?
SPEAKER_00What's 21? What's 21 o'clock?
SPEAKER_01That would be 9 p.m.
SPEAKER_00So I get on the bus at 9 p.m. And then I have a nine-hour and 30-minute bus ride to Paris. Yeah. And then I will have a another six hour ride to Luxembourg.
SPEAKER_01And so you get into Luxembourg at like seven o'clock at night.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. And then the concert would be the next day or that night?
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. The next day.
SPEAKER_01The next day.
SPEAKER_00So I'd get like an evening and a day to explore.
SPEAKER_01And then when would you leave?
SPEAKER_00Sunday morning.
SPEAKER_01And you'd get back when?
SPEAKER_00There's a 12-hour bus because it's direct.
SPEAKER_01A 12-hour bus. You'd get back Sunday night. Wow. That's quite the adventure. Okay, have fun. I think you should fly.
SPEAKER_00Are you paying the difference?
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Oh my lord. Okay. So so you so your your bus ride to Nice was okay?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, except there was a kid that was like throwing up on it. And on the way on the way back. So the way there we took the Flix bus. And then on the way back, we took the blah blah car, which is like the cheapest way you can travel.
SPEAKER_01That is that what it's called? The blah blah car?
SPEAKER_00It's called blah blah car, yeah. That's what I'll be taking to Luxembourg. Yeah, there's this kid who kept getting sick, and then the bus driver's friend was like smoking cigarettes the entire time, like off the bus.
SPEAKER_01On the bus. Fantastic.
SPEAKER_00And I was coming down with my sickness, so I was just like trying not to sneeze and cough from the person next to me, but I didn't have tissues or anything. So I was just like sucking it all back up, which made it worse.
SPEAKER_01And that's only a two-hour bus ride, right?
SPEAKER_00No, because we chose the law car, it was actually three and a half hours.
SPEAKER_01Oh, how many stops did you make?
SPEAKER_00Two.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I took the bus home from college once and it was a three-hour drive between where I went to college and then where I lived in it with grandma and grandpop in Philly. But the bus stopped in every town between Binghamton, New York and Philadelphia. So it was a three hour. So the three-tree-hour trip was nine and a half hours.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I think I'll probably like just I I don't know. I don't know where you just put your microphone, but it's like I'll probably just sleep on the bus and be fine.
SPEAKER_01Well, overnight I would hope you would sleep.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and keep all of my valuables in my suitcase locked. Although, although you've gotten good experience lately pulling all-nighters, so yeah, when we were in Nice, I stayed up until like 6 30 a.m. That's I'm still recovering.
SPEAKER_01That's crazy. For the person that at like 10 o'clock at night is like, I'm tired, I'm going to bed.
SPEAKER_00You And that was no naps during the day either. That was like we woke up at 7, a little before 7, at like 6.30 to walk to the bus station. We get on the bus, it's like a two and a half hour ride because there was no stops on the way there. Um and then we dropped our stuff off at the hostel and we went like exploring Dniester the whole day. And then we went to the club, and then our hostel, you could only enter between 4 and 6 a.m. So we went to the beach and you went swimming.
SPEAKER_01That is such a randomly small window for them not to let you in.
SPEAKER_00I know.
SPEAKER_01Did you know that when you like did you know that when you left for the club that you that it was closed between 4 and 6?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we were hoping something to do.
SPEAKER_01And you couldn't get back at 3.59.
SPEAKER_00We think that we might have been able to because we got there a little bit before six, and the guy was just sitting on the couch and you let us in. So we're thinking that the sign might have not been 100% true.
SPEAKER_01Aha.
SPEAKER_00But it's okay. We stopped at a cafe on the way back, so we walked back, we got some breakfast, and then got wide to shower because I had gone swimming, so I was like full of salt water. So I wanted to rinse off. So I showered, took my medicine, and then slept for like two hours, and then woke up, and we went we got breakfast, and we went to the beach and we did some more exploring. It's on the bottom.
SPEAKER_01That's crazy. Was Nice was Nice nice? Is Nice somewhere we should go when we come visit?
SPEAKER_00You should. It's beautiful.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00It's really pretty there.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I should have brought water shoes with me. The the rock beaches are not meant for bare feet.
SPEAKER_01Oh, well, when we're there, it's gonna be it's not gonna be swimming weather.
SPEAKER_00It's gonna be I don't know, with global warming, you don't know. It's but abnormally hot here.
SPEAKER_01It could be 90 degrees at the end of August or the end of November.
SPEAKER_00The mosquitoes are actually so bad now. They used to have not that many issues with mosquitoes here, but because of the climate is getting warmer and more like tropical, all the mosquitoes are migrating up. Like we were sleeping with our window open, but not anymore because I literally like had bug bites like this big on the bag. Like the size of like a quarter. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So what's the what's the temperature there today?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. I haven't been outside yet today. Oh uh I've been doing homework. Well, like half doing homework.
SPEAKER_01The the homework that you don't have to do? That you don't have a lot of?
SPEAKER_0027 degrees Fahrenheit. What is that? Or Celsius, what is that? Fahrenheit.
SPEAKER_0180 degrees. 85? 80?
SPEAKER_0081.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_00Alright.
SPEAKER_01That's not terrible.
SPEAKER_00It's supposed to rain on Thursday. Oh, it's supposed to be 68 degrees on Thursday. That's oh, but heavy rain. I don't know if I mess with the heavyweight rain walking the class. I'll bring an umbrella.
SPEAKER_01Do you have an umbrella? I was gonna ask.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. I could take the bus, but it feels like a waste of money.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, just stretching out the colour.
SPEAKER_00I've been walking to class every day.
SPEAKER_01So walking walking is good for you.
SPEAKER_00It's only like a 20-minute walk.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, that's good. That's your exercise for the day.
SPEAKER_00And the freaking stairs I have to climb up to get to my apartment. That's my daily exercise.
SPEAKER_01But oh.
SPEAKER_00It's like never-ending twisty stairs.
SPEAKER_01No, it's it's good for you. I'm ex I'm excited about it. I'm excited to see it.
SPEAKER_00It's it's nothing too special. So currently our front door is broken, which is a little scary, but it's okay.
SPEAKER_01So so start oh, broken like it doesn't lock?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like the front door to our building.
SPEAKER_01Oh. Is the but the Town's like relatively safe though, right? Like you don't have to worry about like vagrance or anything coming in. I mean, in theory, shirtless drinking beer and smoking. Or is it wine instead of beer?
SPEAKER_00Wine or beer. I've been having my my drink of choice has been a London mule.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's a good drink.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00I like the fun little glass that it comes in.
SPEAKER_01And like the copper.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and when they put the bottle like upside down in the at my my favorite spot.
SPEAKER_01Have you have you found your gin of choice, or you just take whatever they have?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I just I just whatever the $10 one is, the cheapest.
SPEAKER_01The cheap. Give me the cheapest gin you have.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So were you Nobody else likes gin. I'm the only one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, it's not a it's not a thing in America. So most people in America, like most Americans, don't don't drink gin. So that's not you're you're you're not alone in that. You're not alone in that regard.
SPEAKER_00So I like gin.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know. We all do. It's it's it's cause. That's cause. That's because you hang out with us. So that's true. That's true. That's that's to be expected. So yeah. Start thinking about because we're coming for like 10 days over Thanksgiving, but we'll we'll arrive on Friday. So you have so we'll have that first weekend with you, that Friday, Saturday, Sunday. And then we leave on a Sunday, so we'll have that Friday and Saturday with you as well. So start thinking about start thinking about stuff you stuff you want to do. If there's anything that you've done that you want to show us, or things that you haven't done that you want to do while we're with you, start start making a list.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I'll make a list. Well, we have to go to gluten-free bakery. That's a must.
SPEAKER_01Right, which it looks like it's right around the corner from where we're staying.
SPEAKER_00I had my America Day the other day. That was awesome.
SPEAKER_01What's America Day?
SPEAKER_00Did you Did I not tell you about America Day?
SPEAKER_01Did you did you I think I told mom. Did you shoot off guns and drink Bud Light?
SPEAKER_00No. So my friend Will was feeling kind of homesick. So he was like, I'm having an America day. And I was like, I'll join you. So we go down to his room. He greets us with the sound of an eagle calling.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Then we went to Starbucks. We had breakfast at Starbucks. I had my pumpkin spice chai, which was really good. And the um French Starbucks, you can get this like meal deal where you get a drink, a pastry, and a sandwich for 10 euro. Isn't that amazing?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's not bad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I had that and it was amazing. And for dinner we had five guys.
SPEAKER_01That that is that is Merica Day.
SPEAKER_00I felt really at home in five guys. They were playing Led Zeppelin in the offspring.
SPEAKER_01Did you did you did you find some indigenous people to displace from their land? No, I didn't. No.
SPEAKER_00And then what else did on Friday? Was that the same? No, that was that was Friday. And we went out. And eating eating burgers and fries before going out was not a good idea.
SPEAKER_01Oh. Not good for the belly.
SPEAKER_00Oh no. Not good.
SPEAKER_01Oh, was that the night? Was that the night you were out super late?
SPEAKER_00I mean, not super late. Like I got back at like three, I think. That's super late.
SPEAKER_01That's early here. The clubs don't start until two. That's crazy. I don't understand that. So people just roll out at two in the morning to go.
SPEAKER_00Well, they start, they sit like if they'll sit at one of the other bars. They'll start at a bar and then go to a club.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00So like you get to a bar at like midnight, have a drink or two there, and then mosey your way over to the club at two.
SPEAKER_01And these are like like club clubs with like the thumping beats and DJs and dancing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So the one that we went to, they have two areas. There's a live band in the first area and then a DJ in the second area.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Is the live band any good?
SPEAKER_00We listened to them play superstition. That was pretty good. Okay. Okay. Yeah. Alright.
SPEAKER_01Are you are you picking are you still planning on picking up your guitar this week?
SPEAKER_00Yes. I was messaging with Claude last night. He's returning from his trip tomorrow. I negotiated the price down to 60 euro.
SPEAKER_01Very good.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah. I tried to get 50 and he said he couldn't do that. So that's okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I'm gonna go pick it up tomorrow.
SPEAKER_01And someone and someone's going with you, right? So you're not going to a strange French dude.
SPEAKER_00Or we'll meet in a park or something. There's a park nearby.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Somewhere. Please don't go into strange French dude's house.
SPEAKER_00I won't. I think he said he wanted to meet me somewhere. Like I think I'm picking the location.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00He's gonna call me when he gets back from his vacation. When I have class until 30. He's gonna call me after 5:30. And then I will go pick it up. And I'm so excited. I was getting desperate. I was playing guitar on my computer. Like I found a website, like online guitar, where I could like click the keys on my keyboard and it would play chords for me. So I'm very excited to have an instrument.
SPEAKER_01Very cool. Then you can sit out in the park and play guitar and have people throw money at you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. There's a lot of people doing that here.
SPEAKER_01Oh, is that right?
SPEAKER_00It's always the same people. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you can make friends with the you can make friends with the buskers.
SPEAKER_00The Buskers? They don't make very much though. I don't I hope that's not their full-time gig. Every time I pass by, their cases are empty.
SPEAKER_01I I can't imagine it's a full-time gig.
SPEAKER_00I hope not.
SPEAKER_01So were you uh were you super excited when Donovan called you with his news on Thursday?
SPEAKER_00I was super excited.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, a very we knew that he was gonna find out.
SPEAKER_00Should we share with the c with the class?
SPEAKER_01Oh, that your brother.
SPEAKER_00Donovan Donovan got accepted into his top choice university in London.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so we're gonna lose we're gonna lose him to London, which is okay, as people keep telling us we get to go visit him in London. Yeah. Oh, you can't do it.
SPEAKER_00Because we found out on Fr yeah, I said, guys, let's take shots for Donovan.
SPEAKER_01Oh boy. How does that how does the song go?
SPEAKER_00Oh Nora likes to drink.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Can you can you sing that in French?
SPEAKER_00No, I've just been singing it in English.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Yeah, I told him he was gonna end up finding out the day that he had a soccer game, so that because he wanted to go to and do his work to celebrate for dinner.
SPEAKER_00We did it anyways.
SPEAKER_01No, we did anyway, but we Yeah. And then he and then he put in his 52-week notice at work.
SPEAKER_00He funny.
SPEAKER_01He said he fee he said he feels like he had this like giant he said it was weighing him down because he was so anxious and nervous about finding out.
SPEAKER_00He was gonna get in.
SPEAKER_01Of course he was gonna get in, but he was just so nervous about finding out that that he uh he said it was just weighing him down. Like he felt like he just he feels so much lighter now and happier that he found out.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. That makes me happy.
SPEAKER_01It makes me really happy. And then did I send you the article about their partnership with the school he can't go to, the UCFB, because they won't they won't take visas or they can't give out visas. But that's really cool that the that they have this partnership with this school that does just football.
SPEAKER_00Football.
SPEAKER_01Football stuff that he can.
SPEAKER_00So when would Donovan have to start applying for his visa?
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I mean at least in France, it's you can't apply more than 90 days before your date.
SPEAKER_01Probably I would assume because he hasn't actually gotten his he hasn't gotten his formal acceptance letter yet. He got an email that said, Well he got the email that said that based on your grades, you will be getting a form you will be getting a formal you know, based on your application, you will be getting a formal acceptance in the next you know few weeks or whatever. But then it'll probably be conditional. They don't give out the way I understand it is over there, you don't get accepted, you get accepted with conditions. And so for him, the condition would probably just be graduating high school with a certain should be.
SPEAKER_00I mean, and in the US, like if like for certain schools, if you like really like you know, stop paying attention and caring your second semester senior year, they will rescind your offer.
SPEAKER_01Correct.
SPEAKER_00So like he's not gonna do that.
SPEAKER_01No, he's he's not he's not gonna do that. So he likely won't be able to even accept his like formally accept until after he graduates. And so my guess is he can't start the visa process until that point. So probably not till May.
SPEAKER_00I don't know what the process is like. At least all of his stuff will be in English.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, just just with an accent.
SPEAKER_00I just I like I messed up something on my application because I guess like the word for middle name in French just translates to second first name. And I was like, well, I don't have a second first name and leave that blank. And then when I got to the Visa Center, they were like, you didn't fill this part out.
SPEAKER_01So I'm sorry. Did they give you a do-over? I mean I guess they did because you got to France.
SPEAKER_00I had to pay an extra $50, but seriously? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like like to correct your application?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01That seems, that seems shady to me.
SPEAKER_00It's the government.
SPEAKER_01I know, but that seems that seems like a money grab.
SPEAKER_00Like they oh, we paid for it.
SPEAKER_01Like they purposely make the application like dense, so they can like, oh, we'll just charge you an extra 50 euros so you can't have to redo your application. Wow, what a scam.
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm here, so you are.
SPEAKER_01Congratulations. You made it so what's on the what's on the agenda for the next for the next week or two weeks before we chat again?
SPEAKER_00Uh classes. I want to go somewhere. I think I want to leave France, but I don't know where. Can I see if Miles wants to meet up in Amsterdam?
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Because Miles is in Denmark, so that would kind of be like a center or point.
SPEAKER_01I know you didn't love Amsterdam, but I was not I mean, I I was there, I was there for like six hours. I was not a massive fan, but I will leave it to you to let me know if you make it to Amsterdam with the channel.
SPEAKER_00And I probably have a weekend instead of just six hours.
SPEAKER_01Right. Alright.
SPEAKER_00And then I think my my my group of friends were gonna go to Paris at some point. There's talk of maybe going to Barcelona for Halloween.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Eli's coming soon in like 25 days.
SPEAKER_01Wow. What do you got? What do you have planned for his for his visit?
SPEAKER_00Well, he wants to go to the jazz club. That's really all we have planned so far. I have to figure out where the the best jazz club in Marseille is.
SPEAKER_01Didn't I send you didn't I send you something about a jazz club I found in A?
SPEAKER_00You might have.
SPEAKER_01I think I did. I think I found a jazz, I think I sent you something about a jazz club I found in Ake somewhere.
SPEAKER_00I don't really know much about Marseille. I haven't been yet, so I'll have to do some research. I have some friends in my classes who live in Marseille and then commute to X for school so I can ask them about their spots.
SPEAKER_01Other than you were told it wasn't very safe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but like Cleveland isn't very safe. Don't do stupid things. Like if you're like waving your bag around, like, yeah, someone's probably gonna try and take it from you. I don't know. Like when we were in Nice, I was like, how do people get pickpocketed? Just like don't have things in your pocket, like hold your bag in front of you. I just don't think it's difficult. I don't know. That's my two. Well, have you seen the videos of like pe people trying to pickpocket Americans and they get like the shit beaten out of them?
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's like generational rage is unleashed on anybody who tries to pickpocket an American. There's this one like really famous video, I think it's from Paris, of this woman trying to pickpocket this girl, and she grabs the woman by the ponytail, yanks her back, and gets her bag back.
SPEAKER_01Excellent.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01See, don't don't don't don't mess with America.
SPEAKER_00Don't mess. What are some other things here? Oh, they have like pigeon bombs. I don't mess with that. They I keep thinking I'm hearing gunshots, but it's just like fireworks to get pigeons off of the trees and buildings and stuff.
SPEAKER_01What's wrong with the pigeons?
SPEAKER_00They don't like them. Apparently in Paris they eat pigeon.
SPEAKER_01No.
SPEAKER_00I will not be eating pigeon. I haven't tried escargot yet. Or frog legs.
SPEAKER_01Frog legs are delicious. They just taste like garlic.
SPEAKER_00Maybe I'll try my more adventurous foods when I'm with you guys so I can split them.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Frog legs are amazing.
SPEAKER_00I don't want to order a whole thing to myself.
SPEAKER_01I mean, frog legs just taste like super garlicky chicken.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I don't really like chicken though.
SPEAKER_01Well, then you probably won't like frog legs.
SPEAKER_00I'm trying to think if there's anything else that's new. That's really it. I like um air drying my clothes. I might buy a drying rack when I get home.
SPEAKER_01Growing up, grandmum always air dried our clothes. Like socks and underwear she'd put in the dryer, but anything that she thought might shrink, like pants shirts, whatever, she would she had a whole bunch of drying racks in the basement and she would air dry everything.
SPEAKER_00I I don't know. I feel like my clothes feel like softer.
SPEAKER_01They probably do.
SPEAKER_00Not socks and underwear, though. I would prefer to dry those.
SPEAKER_01You could also just buy fabric softener that would also soften your clothes in the dryer.
SPEAKER_00I use dryer sheets.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00At school. You guys don't use them, but when I'm when I do my own laundry, I put dryer sheets in there.
SPEAKER_01I I I hope our listeners are finding the laundry conversation fascinating.
SPEAKER_00Well, they do laundry differently here. Like you only have like a 15-minute cycle. The like machine itself is really small. You can't put very much in it. So I wish we had a clothesline outside of our window. That's what I wish we had, but we don't have.
SPEAKER_01Could you hang one or no?
SPEAKER_00No, our window's too tiny.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00One day. That's the dream. Have a clothes.
SPEAKER_01Have your shirts flapping in the breeze outside?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, at home, we're not allowed to have you're not allowed to have clotheslines. It's it gets against the rules of our subdivision.
SPEAKER_00Why?
SPEAKER_01No clotheslines.
SPEAKER_00Why do they hate fun?
unknownWhy do they hate fun?
SPEAKER_00And sustainability. You're not allowed to have solar panels, you're not allowed to air dry your clothes. It's ridiculous. I'm trying to decrease my carbon footprint.
SPEAKER_01Good for you.
SPEAKER_00That's a lie. I don't know. I'm just upset that I can't have clothes football.
SPEAKER_01That's why you're riding a bus for 40 hours to Luxembourg.
SPEAKER_00Well, a bus is less has a smaller carbon footprint than a plane. Okay. So and smaller than a car because there's multiple people taking the same journey. Yeah. So take that.
SPEAKER_01Alright. So what are the what what are the dinner plans for tonight?
SPEAKER_00I don't know. Cameron's a little under the weather, so I don't know if we're gonna go out for dinner.
SPEAKER_01Oh no. Did she get your cold?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. We've all kind of been trading the same virus around for like two weeks. Oh no. Just been bouncing around.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Because like when we get drinks, we'll like taste each other's and stuff. So we're all just like sharing germs.
SPEAKER_01Alright. Alright. Well, if you can't go tonight to take a rain check for next weekend.
SPEAKER_00Yes, we will go out to dinner.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00I'll find something for dinner. Monopree has this really good Monoprix. Oh, mom would love Monoprix. The clothes there are very overpriced, but I think mom would like the clothes a lot. It's like Target, but better. And they have this really good frozen butter chicken. So I'm gonna go there later and see if they have it. And then we'll probably have that for dinner.
SPEAKER_01Awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Alright. I am gonna go eat some breakfast since we're recording on Sunday morning. And then I need to go.
SPEAKER_00That's 5 p.m. for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then and then I need to go, I need to go clean out the garage, which is very exciting for my Sunday.
SPEAKER_00Do not throw away any of my things.
SPEAKER_01Throwing away any of your things. Thank you. I don't think there's anything left, but I won't throw away any of your things.
SPEAKER_00I think you already threw them away, actually.
SPEAKER_01Uh probably. Alright, uh, I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna say au revoir. Is that is that how you say it? Is there is is there a less formal way to say goodbye?
SPEAKER_00Ciao.
SPEAKER_01Chow? Okay.
SPEAKER_00Chow it's just like the European thing though.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01Ciao, Nora.
SPEAKER_00Ciao.
SPEAKER_01I will talk to you later in the week and then we will do this again in a couple weeks.
SPEAKER_00Yes. I'm wondering if it might line up when Eli's ears. We might have to do either a week before or a week after.
SPEAKER_01We will figure it out.
SPEAKER_00Figure something out.
SPEAKER_01We will figure something out. We will not abandon our loyal listeners.
SPEAKER_00Don't worry, listeners.
SPEAKER_01We will be back. Have a great week, kiddo. I love you.
SPEAKER_00Love you too.
